FARMERS MARKETS San Diego's cultivated agricultural history began in the 1870's and was one of the most significant areas in the state with the growing of citrus and olives. The commercial olive industry was founded here and many founding families find their names in the history books for advances in this area. San Diego has one of the earliest farm bureaus in the nation too, starting in 1904, and so, it is no wonder that today our farmers markets are one of the nation's most robust. Local produce and artisan food products can be found at any of the markets, some are even set up at historic sites. San Diego County has a long growing season and fresh produce is available year round. With over 6,000 farms in the county, a wide variety of fresh produce can be found at any time of the year.
